Pick Your Own Bop (Yeah, You Can Do That)

To link a custom audio track to your chord chart, you gotta first figure out which library you wanna steal music from for playback. Yeah, they're all slightly different, but—plot twist—they all let you just tap a track & boom, linked. Shizzle.

Once you pick a track, you'll get a Yo, Change This Song dialog that asks if the track's length & tempo should, like, actually matter to your chord chart. (Spoiler: they probably should.)

OnSong gives you access to these libraries:

iTunes Music Library

This option pulls shared audio tracks from the Music app on your device. Linking tracks from iTunes? Yeah, it's got some perks.

  • Tracks chilling in iTunes in the Cloud or iTunes music match? You can access 'em through iTunes music library.
  • Tracks with digital rights management (aka the music industry's paranoia) might need iTunes music library to play 'em.
  • Tracks don't get stored inside OnSong, so your app & backups stay skinny & trim.
  • Tracks are shared across apps & can play from the Music app on your device. Totes convenient.
  • Tracks can have playback metadata (fancy words for "settings you fussed with") from iTunes. Like, you can crank the volume, set start/end times, whatever.
  • OnSong does support background audio when music's playin', BUT if OnSong crashes—which, let's be honest, never happens*—audio stops. With iTunes library tracks, the song keeps jammin' even if OnSong implodes.

Important: iOS 10 got all paranoid & added privacy controls that make OnSong ask permission to touch your Media Library. iOS will nag you. If you say no & then try to link iTunes tracks later, it'll nag you again. You'll need to Let OnSong Peek at Your Stuff in Settings.

OnSong Media Library

Pick this if you wanna wrangle audio files directly inside OnSong without iTunes bossin' you around.

The OnSong media library lives inside your OnSong library. You import & manage tracks without iTunes (nice!), but—big but—those audio files gotta be stored inside OnSong. Translation: your backup files get chunky.

Spotify Library

Choose this if you've got a Spotify account & wanna link streaming tracks to your chord charts instead of hoarding 'em on your device. This opens the Spotify Library screen so you can pick from your saved tracks, albums, artists you're stalkin', or search Spotify's whole catalog for more music to obsess over.
